Put Our Country First

Welcome back!
Those words were uttered by one of the many congresspeople who voted for the bailout that went to the President for signature on Friday. Frankly, I thought that sentiment should have been in the minds of all the congresspeople the whole time they have been in office. I do believe that they are so worried about their own necks that they put forward only those bills and agendas that keep them in office. Instead, they should vote for those things that will do exactly what was stated, put our country first. Why is it that the only time most politicians think of country first is when there is a crisis? The last time anyone decided to put country first was when the Twin Towers, Pentagon and the downed plane in Pennsylvania all happened on the same day. Then there was a very poignant moment when many congresspeople stood on the steps of the Capitol Building, all in one accord, believing that our country needed to come first. When has that happened since? According to the votes, not even Friday but it was closer than it has been for years.
Is it putting our country first when a member of congress and a candidate for President goes into another country and tears down the very country that made him a candidate? Is that the right thing to do? No, I don’t believe that. If I had not made my mind up about who I wanted to vote for in November, that would help me with my vote. There is no way I would want a person in the White House that would trash or speak negatively about our country to people from other countries. That simply is not right. I do realize that we have made mistakes. Everyone, all countries make mistakes at one time or another. There is no reason to bring all that up on a foreign tour, is there? Is this about being honest because if it is, that is the totally wrong way to go about it. When talking like that in other countries, that simply takes our country down in their eyes. That will serve no useful purpose.
On another note concerning the campaigns of both sides. I am disheartened to see that there are character assassinations going on in commercials and in personal tours on both sides of the campaign. I am disgusted with those who feel it necessary to take the low road on this. All the American people want to see and know is….can you do the job we elect you to do? Can you do what is necessary if another type of September 11th attack comes upon us? Will you deal strongly with those other countries that now believe we are not as powerful as we once were? Will you treat the White House Oval Office with respect and not have shady dealings or off color jokes or actions within it’s walls? Will you treat the office of President of the United States of America with all the respect it deserves and we deserve as a nation? Are you the right person for the job or is this more rhetoric from the mouth of a politician who cannot tell the truth?
As a voter, I want to know the answers to these and many more questions. I cannot promise that I will back you on everything you do. I cannot promise that I will vote for you again if you should totally mess up. I can promise you that I will vote for you this time IF you deserve my vote and the votes of the people of the United States of America. Candidate, do you deserve my vote?
