Just When You Think Someone Has A Brain….

Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, Commentary on Sep 15 2008

Welcome back!

There is always one in the crowd. But in this case, it’s a school system. And I could ask “Why am I not surprised?” but I’m not surprised. The school systems in this country are getting worse and worse at just about everything. First, most of them are really there to teach the kids anymore but for the government funds. They gear their whole year to getting those funds through the national tests that they give to the kids. It is no longer about the kids. How sad can it be? Oh, it gets sadder.

Do you remember when you were in fourth grade? You would have been about 10-11 years old, right? Somewhere in there. Now, I do realize that some kids that age are bad seeds. They get into trouble at the drop of a hat and have for years. These kids are not interested in obeying authority figures. In fact, they’re more interested in disobeying authority figures. But we are not talking about a kid like that here. Let me tell you a story about a kid in fourth grade who is well behaved, a good student and does not get into trouble. Is known for that, in fact. So, what’s the catch?

Here it is: A 10 year old boy in a Hilton Head Island school needed to sharpen his pencil. Most kids have those little sharpeners. He had a broken one. However, he used it anyway. Result? He is currently suspended from school for a couple days. Why? Part of the sharpener was missing and the teacher saw him using what appeared to be a razor blade in class. When the police were called, even the officer said that it was obviously from the plastic pencil sharpener. The officer wrote out that the child had no criminal intent whatsoever in what he was doing.

Now comes the extreme stupidity of it all. The school has a ZERO tolerance policy concerning weapons at school. You know the old adage “caught between a rock and a hard place”? This school is caught between the policy and the common sense it takes to see that the kid had no intentions of ripping anyone up with his broken pencil sharpener. This person is not a terrorist. He is a scared little boy who wanted to sharpen a pencil to do his work. DUH! This school has already suspended him and there may be further disciplinary action. What idiocy. What a crock. The fastest way to sour a kid on school is to treat him like this. If I were the parents, I would go after that ZERO tolerance policy. Make the school be HUMAN again. Get the school board to see things on a case by case basis instead of dealing in stupid and stupidest. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When are the schools in general and this one specifically going to see that in order to keep the kids in school, you have to not only treat them right but offer them something that actually resembles an education?

How can those people call themselves educators when they obviously have no idea what their brains are for in the beginning? It almost sounds like lawsuit time there. Drastic action to get some to wake up to reality. That child needs prayer.

Absolutely, the kid needs prayer. And so do the “educators” that are running that school system. It is a shame that schools are no longer interested in teaching but in all their so called zero tolerance policies.

Thanks for your comments on this very important subject.

Glad you could visit. We are encouraged when people choose to take an interest in the situations like this one with a child who obviously was not trying to beat the system or do something wrong. He just wanted to sharpen a pencil. Perhaps he did it the wrong way but, hey, the kid is 10. Cut him some slack.

      Thanks.

Thanks for pointing out such an important subject. I feel regret full by saying that educating the generation is not now the strategy of our current schooling system
