The Farm

Posted by: From Arkansas in Family stuff on Apr 25 2008

Welcome back!

My parents lived on the farm for some years. My sister grew up on it. She had my dream…a horse of her own. Of course, when I dreamed that dream, we lived in a city with no way to have such an animal. In fact, at the time, we lived in a duplex that my parents owned. It would have been truly difficult for them to get me a pony or horse.

But, my sister did have that. I guess we all pay a price for what we want though. I lived in a city with buses to go just about anywhere I wanted to go. There were movies, roller skating, ice skating, bowling, parks and a whole lot more than that. My sister had her horses, no buses except school, going to school, a movie theater, a bowling alley that has seen much better days. There is, of course, the local famous discount store where everyone meets at one time or another.

Nope, my sister did not have the advantages I did but I think she was and is happy with what she does have. She grew up with the pony and horse. There were chickens too, unfortunately. And cows. But for the most part, she had her horse and pony. I can still see her, as a teenager, going into the local feed and seed and ordering horse supplies instead of saving money for the movies or something else. But I am certain that she was totally happy with that since she loved and still loves horses. And I would be green with envy if I didn’t feel blessed instead.

I read you post, and it made me think about my childhood. I worked on a family farm in the Summer, and lived in the city the rest of the year. I had the best of both worlds, and my fondest memories are of the freedom and simplicity that farm life provided.

Sounds great. And I love the idea of the best of both worlds. I lived on their farm for some time but I was already grown by then. It would have been great fun to grow up there.

But I did visit a farm for a while when I was younger. And as an adult I worked on one. There is just something grand about living and working on a farm that I cannot shake from my life.

      Thank you for your comments!!
