The Slip Of The Lip

Posted by: From Arkansas in Family stuff, Humor on Apr 11 2008

Welcome back!

We watch “Boston Legal” on ABC network on Tuesday nights. It stars William Shatner and James Spader. The whole show is a hoot but Spader’s character, Alan Shore, has an affliction he calls “word salad”. Words get transposed and mixed up. In his case, it’s usually around a certain person. The question I have is….is that a real situation? Do people really have word salad problems? And I can actually answer that one. YES! Both my husband and I have had that affliction.

When the word salad comes out of the mouth, the individual usually does not know that they have uttered such nonsense until people start to laugh. I have been a victim of word salad jokes myself. Personally, I think it’s fun. My husband can come up with some very funny things when that happens. My Dad was that way too. I have a slip of the lip on many occasions as well.

The other day, my husband was admiring some lawn mowers. He had mentioned about the small motors housed in a lawn mower. I really have not a clue about these things but he seemed to know what he was saying….well, until it came out differently. Apparently, he was trying to say the name of the motor in one of the mowers but what he actually said was Briggs and Riley. Now I have no clue who these chaps are but they aren’t the names on the mower’s motor. One of these days, he is going to say something like that and we will actually get an answer when those two guys show up!!!

I’m pretty sure that’s actually called a “Spoonerism”. Not being rude, just informing.

Yeppers, it probably is called that but when it came up on Boston Legal, we couldn’t stop laughing for a while. Then, we decided to call it that ourselves.

Thanks for the heads up on that and thank you very much for reading and commenting!!!
