Calif. Judge: Crime To Homeschool Kids Without Credentials
Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, Commentary on Mar 14 2008
Welcome back!
The news came out today about the California judge who says that, in that state, it is a CRIME to homeschool YOUR children without teacher’s credentials. Now I do realize that other states are already there with this. THAT is a crime!!! Parents should be able to homeschool their children as they see fit. The crime comes when the state decides how the child is raised, not the parents.
I have a lot to say about this subject, most that some people do not want to hear. As far as I know, I still live in the United States of America where it is supposed to be at least a bit free. Apparently I was mistaken. The ruling in California shows exactly what type of state that is..and it’s not a democracy. If parents are not allowed to school their own children without a teaching license, then the state is FORCING the parents to send the kids to a school that is inadequate to say the least.
In our state, the child can be homeschooled without the credentials but the kid has to stay in school until he/she is 17 years old now. It used to be 16. I do not see the point of that. Whatever the situation, in each state there are some regulations. Frankly, I think that the parents should have some say in all this. Apparently, in California, they have absolutely none whatsoever. THAT is a crime!!
EDIT NOTE: Here is part of what the ruling judge had to say:
“Parents do not have a constitutional right to home school their children… parents who fail to comply may be subjected to a criminal complaint against them, found guilty of an infraction, and subject to imposition of fines or an order to complete a parent education and counseling program.” —-Justice H. Walter Croskey

We homeschooled one of our children for a year here in Canada. Every week we downloaded his school work from an online school we signed up with. This was a site run by an actual school with teachers to help us out. Do you have options like this in your area?

No, we do not. I believe that we could use something like that but in Arkansas, you do have to teach something closely related to what the current school’s curriculum is and, of course, the tests have to be the same.
Thank you for visiting!!
