Air Force Gives Big Defense Contract To European Company
Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, Shame of America on Mar 11 2008
Welcome back!
The Air Force is being ridiculed for giving a huge defense contract to European companies, European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp., who will supply fuel tankers to our American military. The workers and the company at Boeing Co. are angry over this and are protesting the $35 billion contract. The Air Force has faced criticism from Boeing workers, the congress, especially those members from Kansas and Washington state where Boeing has plants and the American public.
I heartily agree with those protests. The Air Force has gone out of the country to award a huge contract when our country is facing certain recession and with the loss of 45,000 jobs to Europe it is unlikely that this will dampen down anytime soon. This is not to be tolerated by the American people whose jobs are on the line and new jobs that could have been made for those out of work due to cutbacks. It is unbelievable that any government agency of this country would do such a thing that will injure the economy more than it already is.
And I would like to point out here that the Air Force, of all agencies, should want the young men and women of this country to know that they back those in the field. I cannot see how those people could believe that our country backs them up if our own defense department goes out of country to award contracts that are supposed to make them feel safer. I know this. I would NOT feel safer with some item or product that was made outside our country.
This leaves me no choice but to award the SHAME OF AMERICA award to the Air Force for it’s total lack of brain power and absolute stupidity in handling this. This should call for an investigation by the congress as to what person or persons did this, why they did it and what it’s going to take to get it retracted.

BTW, Northrop Grumman is an American company…too bad this contract went to a French company?
Yes, it is too bad since we need the jobs here in the US.
Thanks for visiting.
1) Shame on Boeing for being unable to compete with the foreign company.
2) It isn’t clear what the net difference in American job creation would be - what is certain is that whoever gets the contract will be employing US workers for sure.
3) The Air Force hasn’t made any bones about it, their priority is to pick the best technology at the best prices. US job growth isn’t their responsibility, so they didn’t consider it.
I wouldn’t want our soldiers using subpar technology so we could feel good about a few thousand extra jobs in a three trillion dollar economy.
Of course that’s all assuming that the Air Force really went with the bid that gave them the best technology at the best prices. The Government Accountability Office will look into that. It’s ridiculous to pile on the Air Force for (potentially) choosing a superior “foreign” product over an interior “domestic” one (quotes added because whichever company gets the contract will have different aspects of production taking place all over the globe).
1) I totally agree with you about them not being able to compete. However, I do believe that our own government should seek out companies that are in the US.
2)If those jobs go out of country, there is no way Americans will be doing all that. And if they are doing some of the jobs in the other country, the rest have lost theirs because they can’t go out of country to get it. The loss would be huge. Then there’s the idea of keeping that money INSIDE the US when the US is about to hit a depression. We need that money right here, not off in some other country.
3) That is such a problem because I do believe that our country’s companies SHOULD be able to make those products with safety and assurances that they will hold up when needed.
I think that the government should actually tell the companies that they had better shape up to produce a better product. I think they should demand it instead of paying out outrageous amounts of money for substandard products.
I think that the only time they should go out of country is when there is no other way and NOT during a recession time in our country. That shows that our own government does not believe in our country. IF they do not and the citizens of this country do not, then who will????
