UPS Does Not Turn Left….Ever Again!
Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me? on Mar 06 2008
This particular piece of information I first read about on a blog called Everyday Randomness. After that, I went searching out a few things about that. Seems that UPS saves a bundle on not turning left. UPS wants to do the right thing. (If they want that, then they need to deliver on time and in good shape. They do. At least from what experiences I have had)
Seems the company has gone green. They are working to save money and fuel dollars by eliminating the left turn from their routes. I have to admit that, as an ex-trucker who did plenty of left turns, I fail to see how it’s going to save that much money especially if the driver’s only option is to turn left. But then, they have this incredible software that tells them where to go. I did say that, didn’t I. Actually, I always thought their drivers had minds of their own. But being a good green company, they are giving the drivers small electronics that tell the driver what route to take and how to turn it.
Oh for the good ol’ days when drivers could figure their own routes. I suppose that is history now. Seems that the company has 95,000 trucks running around out there. Scary. They are attempting to cut way down on wasted fuel and carbon emissions. For that, they get a huge thanks! I have been behind those trucks before. Cough, cough.
I do have to say that I thought it was a ditzy idea to do that. Maybe it isn’t so bad…well, until you come across a post like the one I read about the UPS and how parking in the middle of the street is pretty dangerous. I can think of some places that you either turn left or hike the road. I guess UPS drivers have to be in pretty good shape. Now I know why.

I just thought a little more about the no left turn thing.
Seriously is it going to save them any cash? Take a look at middle of the nowhere places like where I live. If you can’t make one left turn you have to go out of your way a good 5 or 6 miles just to turn down my road. How many times are those drivers going to have to drive extra miles to get to a location just because they can’t turn in one direction. It seems like a lost cause to me!
Jenn’s last blog post..Finally Talked To UPS
I don’t actually know if it will or not. It totally makes no sense to me but I am not holding one of their little computers that tell them exactly where to drive and where to stop. It might but my brain is going “tilt” just thinking about it. LOL!
Thanks for coming by!
I don’t quite see how they’re able to get away with parking in the middle of the street. I noticed they do it here but I assumed that since it’s such a narrow road - they really had no choice.
I don’t see how it’s going to help the environment. When you think about it, they have to make 3 rights to make a left. Wouldn’t that spew MORE toxins into the air? It makes no sense.
I know, I do not see how the local police would allow such things other than they simply haven’t seen it yet. Our UPS driver always came up to the house in our driveway. If he parked in the street, it would block it.
Well, it would be three right turns if they did not have another way out. They are carrying an electronic device that gives them route info.
But I do agree with you. Can’t see how it’s going to save that much money.
Thanks for the visit and comment!!
