Standing In Times Square On New Year’s Eve

Welcome back!
I have to say this. There are thousands of people who brave the weather in New York City to go to Times Square on New Year’s Eve day and wait for midnight in order to celebrate the dropping of the ball to ring in the new year. They do this every year. My question is WHY?
Are you kidding me? Those people go there, anticipating standing or occupying a space for the better part of six to ten hours, not leaving to go to the bathroom because there really aren’t too many anyway. I saw an interview with someone who had brought adult diapers to wear so that they did not have to lose their spot at Times Square. In that same interview, the people had been there since about 2:30pm. EST. Do the math.
Can anyone see the logic in all this? The ball does the same thing every year. It drops, slowly, but it drops. They do change the thing and, I suppose, they improve it but all the same, it drops. When the thing gets to the bottom of it’s drop, it stops. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! This ball dropping thing happens for a few seconds. These people spend the better part of a day, standing around, getting drunk so that they can watch a ball drop some feet and stop.
HELLO???? Does anyone at all see the sense in this? Yes, it is tradition. Yes, they do stuff like that all over the world. Yes, it is a New York City draw. I do not argue any of those things. However, I cannot fathom the reasoning here. And I suppose I never will.
