Traveling In My Youth

Posted by: From Arkansas in Family stuff, Travel on Dec 19 2007

Welcome back!

When I was about 12 years old, back in the dark ages (or so I am told by those in our family who are much younger than I), my great aunt and I took a trip to Colorado. We were actually going to visit my cousins, uncle and aunt near Denver. After we had visited with them for a couple of days, my great aunt decided we needed to go up into the mountains. I was, of course, happy to do that having not been outside my home state for years.

We ended up in Estes Park, Colorado where we found some absolutely fabulous scenery. It was beautiful and although I was at a young age, I could still appreciate the beauty there. We stayed in a cabin a couple of days. My great aunt wanted to go on a tour but I wanted horses!! Horses!! So, she gave me my wish and she went on her tour. I did not care that I didn’t know anyone, just that I got to be on a horse for a couple of hours. I did not have the standard horse riding apparel but I did have on jeans and a shirt, regular shoes instead of boots.

The ride was fantastic! That was actually the first time I really got to ride a horse without help. I did get to ride the ponies at the carnivals but this was different. We went on a trail ride. What fun! We went out for about 2 hours. The one thing I will admit is that when I got off that horse, I was bowlegged for about 3-4 hours after that but it was worth it! That was a great time in my life.
