At Christmas, We Need To Make Things…Like Food

Posted by: From Arkansas in It Ain't Sorted, So What on Dec 16 2007

Welcome back!

While I do know my way around the kitchen when it comes to cooking, baking appears to be a problem for me. There are others like me and I take heart in that. Rachael Ray is a great cook but doesn’t do well with baking. I feel better now.

I was talking to my sister the other day about my Mom’s pie crust recipes. She only makes pies around the holidays anymore so I do not get a chance to taste the great crusts all year like I want to do. If I were to make the things, well, you have no idea what might come alive. Trust me here. It ain’t pretty. See, I have problems with ingredients for starters. I save everything too. So, if we used some ingredients for other things and then saved it for a new use, well, that works for me. I can hear it now!! ACK! People are rebelling against me already and I haven’t even said what I do that with. Sigh. It’s a strange world but I live here so I have to make the best of it.

If Mom were baking a pie, she would use fresh and new ingredients. I use what I have and make disasters. It’s a gift. She uses fresh cisco, er um, crisco in her pies. I even have a problem with the name of that. I think it’s an ingredient dyslexia of some sort. And it would not necessarily be new cisco…crisco. Well, I do deep fry things from time to time. I do not believe in waste. So, I would use used cisco….that name….crisco for the pie crust. You know, come to think of it, that might make my problem for the crusts. Mom uses new stuff. I use what’s available. Perhaps some day, I will get a huge clue and do it the right way. Until then, I suspect I will stick to cooking and leave the baking to someone else who knows more about it than I do…like Mom!

No matter how it looks, as long as it’s nice to eat then that means you have success!

Absolutely! Although there are a few things I would rather they looked good before I eat them. LOL!
