For Dog And Cat Lovers Everywhere, This Is Outrageous
Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, Commentary, It's A Rant on Oct 18 2007
Welcome back!
I will warn you up front that this is a rant. This type of thing just makes my teeth grind. Ellen DeGeneres and her live-in partner adopted a dog from a rescue league. Now, having worked for one in the past, I do know how they operate usually. They adopted the dog, signing papers that stated they would take care of the animal and where the animal was going to reside.
Because the dog did not get along with their cats that already lived there, Ellen gave the dog to her hairdresser and family. That was the calm part. All you-know-what broke loose when the rescue league took back the dog. At that point, a tearful Ellen goes on national television and pleas for the return of the dog. The public reacted in ways that she did not foresee. They started to threaten the rescue league owners.
Now here is what does it for me. DeGeneres should have notified the rescue league of the change of residence for the dog because that was part of the agreement she signed. And she should have kept this out of national attention. She used her celeb status to get back at the rescue league. That makes me so angry. My teeth are grinding.
However, when the rescue league found out about this, all they had to do was contact her and work something out. Instead, they took a dog back that could have had a nice home with children who loved it. They could have simply talked to the people who now had possession of the dog. Instead, they did something that will hurt the dog more than help simply by caring more about legal issues than the life and welfare of the dog. Was the second home as good as the first one? If so, why not allow the pet to stay while this is worked out? No. They had to go in and rip the dog away from the family that was willing to care for him. DUH!!! More teeth grinding.
The people I worked for were flexible about these things. Yes, Ellen should have notified them. Granted. That was wrong and that was against the contract. She should have kept her celeb backside off the television with her obviously small problem. The rescue league should have been more interested in the welfare of the animal instead of their own pride. What a mess. This is ridiculous.

I agree. I didn’t see Ellen on tv but I heard about it. I think she should have just things the legal way and everything would have worked out. I think both parties handled it poorly and it’s sad because this dog could have been loved and wanted by this family.
That’s so true. Isn’t it sad that celebs feel that because they are right there in front of the world..they can use that to promote something like this situation? Ellen had no need to do that. All she had to do was contact the place and get the approval unless she thought they would not give it. Not good.
Then, the rescue people handled it so wrong too. Seemed like they both overreacted a whole lot. I haven’t heard another thing about this so no idea if the dog was able to be in that other house or not.
So really extreme all around. Thanks for commenting!!
