Inmates Clogging The System…The Old Guys

Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, Give Me A Break, News And More Stuff on Sep 29 2007

Welcome back!

It seems that our wonderful prison system, having been revived by tougher laws, are now getting choked on too many inmates. Not just any inmates, the old guys. There are prisoners in wheel chairs, using canes and other appliances to walk and breath and those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Yes, they do need to serve their time but what good does it do to punish someone who has no idea what it’s about anyway? What good does it do to punish those who have no hope of life anyway? This is sick.

Apparently, the soaring numbers of aging inmates exceeds the growth of the general population. That says there is something desperately wrong with this. The tough sentencing laws of the 1980s and the 1990s did work pretty well…until now. Those same people are being housed, fed and given boatloads of meds at a huge cost. These same people do not have any hope of recovery in their sicknesses. Isn’t it time to start weeding these folks out into a system that can better take care of them? Right now, the states are carrying the load on cost. If they were released, the federal government can come in and help lighten the load.

In the 16 southern states, the laws have become the toughest in the nation with a 145 percent growth of age 55 and older inmates. There really ought to be a better way. Why not contact your congressperson and get your comments in to them.
