My Car Insurance Days, Then And Now

Posted by: From Arkansas in Family stuff, Odds And Ends on Aug 22 2007

Welcome back!

When I was still a teen, I could care less about insurance of any kind. It just did not enter my realm. After I was out on my own, suddenly insurance became a major part of my life. For one thing, I had a car. In all the states that I have lived, car insurance is a requirement to get your tags. If you don’t have it, no tags. Did you see how expensive car insurance is if you are or have a teen? Ouch!

There have been a couple accidents too in all the years I’ve had the car insurance. Because none of them were my fault, thank God, I was able to deal with the other person’s insurance company with, usually, a satisifactory ending. For instance, our Omni was rearended by another car in slick conditions. Nobody at fault. Our car was an accordian. Thank goodness we didn’t need Life insurance. We didn’t have any at the time.

However, the insurance folks were really helpful. I know what you are thinking here. They were getting by pretty cheaply dealing with me instead of some lawyer. Probably. But here’s the thing. Our car was old. The book value didn’t really exist except as our transportation. The insurance company recognized that and settled for way more than what we could get for the car because it had to be replaced. Not bad there.

Ah but, there are more kinds of insurance than just car. Frankly, a homeowner should get Home insurance. It would be wise for anyone who owns their own home. With all the flooding and different storms that are happening, it would be important to acquire life insurance as well. This is not the time to leave your family unprotected in case something happens to one of the adults in the family.
