Walmart At It Again….Paying Teens Zero Dollars
Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, What Were They Thinking?, What's Your Opinion? on Aug 02 2007
Welcome back!
How cheap can the discount giant actually get??? It seems that Walmart has been in Mexico for some time now. They employ many thousands of people. They are the biggest employer in the region. Unfortunately, they are also one of the cheapest employers as well.
Apparently, they have signs in the windows of all Mexico Walmarts saying that the teens, ages 14-16, are volunteer workers and do not get paid….except by the gratuity that a customer gives to the teen who has bagged up the groceries and othe products.
Now, Walmart displays this in their windows. It’s so that they do not have to pay benefits nor deal with the local laws on employing minors. The laws do not cover “volunteers”. There are about 19,000 of them.
The problem is that most people are scraping by on about $4 a day income so any source of income is gratefully received. Walmart takes full advantage of this. It is perfectly legal though I question the ethics. Is Walmart being el-cheapo? What’s your opinion?
