School Puts PowerPoint In The Entrance Requirements

Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me? on Jul 31 2007

Welcome back!

It’s that time of year again…kids going back to school, teens going on to college. Soon, the young adults will be packing up their things and heading off to a new school. But, they had to pass some stiffer requirements in the last year or two.

The University Of Chicago, a top business school in the country, has put PowerPoint in as an entrance requirement. The familiar slideshow presentation is usually seen in boardrooms but now this school wants their entering freshmen to be up on that particular program ahead of showing up. They believe that students can show a creativity that would not be possible in the usual applications. The school is seeking to attract students who are not interested in simply putting why they like going to that school on their applications. Too boring, says the folks who read them.

My only problem with this is that they are using the Microsoft program almost exclusively. I do not think it’s a wise thing to let any one company have that much power over people. Isn’t it bad enough that most computers that are sold today have some type of Micromoney programs included so that most folks like me, computerly challenged, have to put up with these because we don’t know really how to do anything else?

Welcome to the point and click generation of computer users. Here we are.

This may be a good way to find those students who have the creative adaptability to work on computer systems and teach them separately to excel. I know if I was offered that type of program in school I would have loved it.

Yes, I appreciate that part of it too. My only problem is that they are further empowering Micro… to “take over the world” so to speak. That part bothers me a lot. Perhaps there are other programs out there too.

I agree with you. But there are so many different types of Power Point clones, including Open Office and online and linux variations. Perhaps if there was more of a pull in those directions it would be more beneficial.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. I believe that. Thank you!

All throughout high school I used wordperfect because that what my high school used and had on the school-owned computers. Then, when I got to college, everything was word based. I think it’s a good thing that this school is being very clear and upfront about their expectations. It took me about a year to learn the ins and outs of microsoft vs. corel programs, mainly because I didn’t know I needed to and so I didn’t take the time.
