“Does Hell Exist?” Asks 20/20 On ABC

Posted by: From Arkansas in Commentary, My Take on Things on Jul 14 2007

Welcome back!

I watched 20/20 on ABC tonight asking if hell actually exists. This question is extremely personal to me since I believe in both hell and heaven as a Born-again Christian. The reporter was Bill Weir and while I respect his job and how well he can do it on other questions, his whole report was seriously lacking and rather slanted. This is something that we have come to expect from the Disney owned ABC.

Perhaps the report that bothered me most (my feelings will not be understood by many on this) was the one concerning a fairly well-known preacher who once was an on fire preacher and pastor for the Lord Jesus. I say “once was” because something has happened to him. Something not good. I know that I will get arguments there too. He left a thriving church with a large congregation because he got some type of “revelation” that there is no hell from a (how ironic) story on ABC reported by Peter Jennings. (Ironic because Peter Jennings himself did a story on Jesus where he portrayed Him as something much less than He is. Yes, Jesus is alive! Peter Jennings is not.)

It saddens me so much to see someone that I used to watch on TV become what he has. A preacher that I knew was preaching the Gospel to the world. I heard the message he taught. It was great. It was filled with the Power of God. Now, he believes that there is no hell except on earth. That completely negates the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus on the cross. He now teaches that to his followers. There are about 300 in his congregation in a rented church. He believes that his message will get out and he will receive his church back to him. That is so not right.

I will not preach some “pie in the sky…feel good, hugs and kisses type religion just because that is what the public wants to hear. It grieves me to see that he is doing so. See, it feels good to believe that hell is only on earth. That way, there is no responsibility for your life. No sin and no punishment except here. That way, there is a better place no matter how nasty you were here. It’s all great in the afterlife. But Jesus teaches us that if we are not responsible for our actions that we are destined to hell. If we confess what we have done, then Jesus can help us by accepting us and wiping away our sins. If there is no hell, there is no reason for Him to be a Savior.

God specifically says in the Bible that Jesus died and went to hell, then rose from the dead to sit at His Right Hand. Jesus was clear that no one comes to the Father except through Him (Jesus). He died on the cross to save us from our sins. The part that had to occur was for Him to go into hell and come back out. If He did not do that, then everything the Bible says has to be a lie because the Bible talks about Jesus all through it. If He is not Who He says He is, we are all doomed. He is either Who He says He is or He is the biggest liar on the face of the earth.  I WILL NOT BELIEVE THAT!!! I have too much proof that God is not a liar, that Jesus is not a liar. This makes me so sad. This person is going to do so much damage.

I take great comfort in the fact that there is a heaven and a hell and that people will get their just rewards on the other side. I firmly believe that reprecussions for our life here is what awaits when we die.

Only animals don’t have to worry about a hell. I believe they get a direct pass into heaven :)

Yes, I understand how you feel. I take great comfort in the fact that God is a good God who is not trying to be a punishing God but One Who is seeking each person to come to Him. It is a blessing. Thank you for your comment!

I turned the TV on to watch that, but at the last minute I just swithed it off, because I just knew I would come away dissatidfied with the angles they used.

Angie, I know what you mean. ABC is just one of the networks that are extremely slanted in what they report. This was no different. And I was not satisfied with the way that was reported either. Thank you for your comment!
