Diabetes Drug Unsafe

Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me? on Jul 13 2007

Welcome back!

About a month ago, it was announced that the drug Avandia was unsafe for diabetics due to possible heart attacks from taking the drug. Since then, the reports on the health risks through side effects have tripled. It is unlikely that the doctors were actually aware of how this particular drug was affecting their patients. Now, they are reporting it.

This brings up a huge problem with the safety tracking system that is supposed to red flag such things as this health risk. The drug has been on the shelves for 8 years. You would think that there could have been more warning concerning such a health risk to diabetics. These drugs deal with regulating blood sugar in a diabetic. And this story hits home since I was recently diagnosed with diabetes though I am believing that my blood sugar will be naturally regulated with my diet program.

What is scary is that when the report came out, notices flew in about heart problems, heart attacks, deaths and major hospitalizations all likely due to that drug that has sat on the shelves and prescribed to over 6 million people in those 8 years. Surely there was some indication that there was a problem!! Though I do not believe in lawsuits unless truly warranted, I can see where that is sure to happen here.

Wow, I hadn’t heard of this. It seems there’s been a lot of drugs recalled or taken off the market in recent years for causing cardiovascular problems. You’d hope that a company would have figured there was a problem after the first year of it being on the market let alone 8 years!

I know. It should have been on their radar from the beginning but it wasnt. Now, so many have already had the problems associated with it. I can smell lawsuits all over the place. Whew!

This is an unfortunate byproduct of our entire pill popping Western take on medicine. We want to make all of our ailments go away without any form of sacrifice, so we count on the mighty pharmaceuticals, and put just about anything a doctor tells us into our stomachs. And yes, there have been far too many recalls, and no, Big Pharma will not responsibly fix their problem, they are about shareholder relations, not patient relations.

Yes, this is part of what is wrong with this country. The person feels bad, find a pill to fix it. You are so correct. I can see more blogging on this subject coming from here!!! Thank you for commenting.
