Don’t Get Caught With Your Sagging Britches Down
Posted by: From Arkansas in Are You Kidding Me?, What Were They Thinking?, What's Your Opinion? on Jul 12 2007
Welcome back!
This particular story is one that I have a problem with simply because I can see both sides of this issue. The problem: Young men with sagging britches that are down so low that you can see more than you wanted to ever see. The solution: A $500 fine and/or 6 months in jail in Delcambre, La., at least.
My problem is this. I believe in the rights of people and they should be able to dress like they want to…within reason. Therein lies the problem for me. Is it reasonable for those young men to dress in that manner? Is it right for them to show anything of themselves they choose to? That answer is no!! Absolutely not.
Second problem: Can a city or town make a law saying that you cannot wear certain clothes or clothes in a certain way? Yes, up to a point. They have had decency laws on the books for a multitude of years. You cannot dress in a manner that shows your body indecently. What is that? Showing any part of your body that should be covered by clothing. A person’s genitals or woman’s breasts are like that. Nothing else that I know of these days though.
But now, states, cities and towns across the country are rebelling against the sagging pants. I have to agree with this one. I do not appreciate having to look at someone who cannot buy clothes that at least basically fit. On the other hand, I certainly am not sure if we can go so far as to legislate the way we dress to that extent. It begins to infringe on a person’s rights, I would think.
Now, I throw this one out to you, the reader. What Is Your Opinion?

I can see your point, both side of it
I feel the same way. In many ways I don’t want to see those pants like that. Some of them are so low I’ve actually seen them fall off. That’s wrong. But the thought of more laws doesn’t sit well with me either. I don’t want the government (at any level) telling me what I can and can’t do. So yeah, it’s a tough one.
It is tough. More government and laws, we really do not need. But, what do we do about the people who insist on wearing those saggy pants? It is indecent but they do not see it that way. Sigh.
A pretty difficult question/situation. They have had absurd laws all over God’s green earth for centuries. Do I want to see some kid with sagging pants? Uh no - thanks!
Do I allow my children to dress that way - again - nope.
However, I do not think that they should be fined/ticketed nor do I think it is fair to pass a law against such a thing. Ah well, the government is always in our personal business anyway.
Yes, difficult but as you said, we do not need more government in our lives. Thank you for commenting!
